1. Where is Pakbeng?

Is Pakbeng worth visiting? Pakbeng is a picturesque village located along the Mekong River in northern Laos. This small but significant town serves as the midpoint for all slow boats traveling between Huay Xai and Luang Prabang. While many travelers view Pakbeng as just a transit point, it's a village brimming with authentic Laotian charm. The best time to visit Pakbeng is between November and January when the weather is typically dry and pleasantly warm. DAY 1: Huay Xay - Pakbeng (Mekong River Boat Trip)

  • After completing border formalities in Huay Xay, a guide will pick you up and transfer you by tuk-tuk to the boat pier. 
  • You will board a traditional boat for a scenic trip down the Mekong River, stopping at tribal minority villages like Hmong, Yao, and Khmu. 
  • In Pakbeng, visit the local market and experience the daily lifestyle of colorful hill tribe traders exchanging goods. 
  • Stay overnight in Pakbeng.

DAY 2: Pakbeng - Pak Ou Caves - Luang Prabang (boat Trip On Mekong River)

  • As you cruise down the Mekong River, you'll see untouched forests, small villages, and maybe even a couple of elephants with their mahouts. 
  • You'll also check out a fishing village, a village where they make rice wine, and get to taste the famous Lao Rice wine. Have lunch with the best food in Pakbeng.

3.2. Stay in Pakbeng for 3 Days

DAY 1: Mekong River – Pak Ou Caves – Pakbeng

  • Heading out of town from Luang Prabang, we hop on boat Luang Prabang to Pakbeng, the first stop is Ban Xanghai village to see how local rice wine is made. 
  • Then, we'll continue to Pakbeng, and visit the Pak Ou Caves with thousands of Buddha statues. The Mekong was a major transport route, and Pakbeng developed as an overnight stop for traders. 
  • Stay overnight in Pakbeng.

DAY 2: Pakbeng – 1000 Years Old Tea Forest

  • Get to see an amazing forest with trees that are up to 2000 years old in Pakbeng. Even though it's not officially protected, the primary forest is wild with lots of beautiful nature and wildlife. 
  • You'll also visit some villages and a local school (except on school holidays). Along the way, you'll stop and chat with some friendly villagers and spend time in different ethnic group villages. 
  • Plus, you'll try some super healthy 1000-year-old tea made the traditional way with local villagers. 
  • We'll head back to the resort just in time to catch the sunset, and then we'll stay the night in Pakbeng.

DAY 3: Pakbeng – Tad Talae Waterfall – Namkat Yorla Pa

  • After breakfast, you will leave for Muang La and observe local rural life, markets, and stunning views along the way. 
  • You'll visit the Tad Talae Waterfall, located 35 kilometers from Pakbeng, and enjoy the fresh atmosphere under the pristine forest. The waterfall consists of 7 beautiful levels and is best visited from June to February. 
  • You can also explore local ethnic hill tribe villages. In the afternoon, continue to Namkat Yorla Pa via Oudomxay, a bustling trading hub. 
  • Arrive at Namkat Yorla Pa late afternoon for an overnight stay.

4. How to Get to Pakbeng

Getting to Pakbeng is an essential part of your journey, whether you're coming from Luang Prabang or Huay Xai.

4.1. Luang Prabang to Pakbeng

The most popular way to travel from Luang Prabang to Pakbeng is by taking the scenic Pakbeng to Luang Prabang slow boat along the Mekong River. The journey typically takes about 7 to 8 hours, allowing you to enjoy stunning riverside views and stop at local villages along the way. 

For those in a hurry, a speedboat option is also available, reducing travel time to around 3 to 4 hours, though it can be a more thrilling ride. Alternatively, you can take a bus or hire a private car, which will take approximately 4 to 5 hours by road.

4.2. Huay Xai to Pakbeng

Traveling from Huay Xai to Pakbeng is a classic part of the Mekong River slow boat journey, usually completed in one day. The slow boat Pakbeng from Huay Xai takes about 6 to 7 hours, offering a relaxing and picturesque experience. 

Moreover, road travel is another option, with buses and private cars making the journey in approximately 4 to 5 hours.
